GROWING INSTRUCTIONS - HYDROPONICALLY

What You Will Need:

  • Microgreen Seeds
  • Hydroponic Medium
  • 2 Growing Trays Without Holes
  • 1 Growing Tray With Holes

Preparation: Start by nesting the growing tray with holes into a growing tray without holes.

Place the Hydroponic Medium of your choice (Jute, Bamboo, Micro-Mat) into your tray and dampen thoroughly.

Scatter your seeds evenly on top of the Hydroponic Medium. The seeds should be roughly the size of two seeds apart from each other to prevent tangling and encourage successful growth. Water the seeds thoroughly with a spray bottle.

Blackout: To encourage germination and growth; the Microgreens need to go through a blackout phase.

Take your other tray without holes and lightly mist the inside of it – evenly. This tray gets stacked on top of the two other trays (top to top) and will create the blackout while also acting as a humidity dome.

Be sure to evenly mist the seed tray every 8-12 hours (roughly 20 sprays) – but check every 6 or so to make sure the Hydroponic Medium isn’t drying out.  Repeat for the next few days.

After 2-4 days, uncover the Microgreens and expose to light. Place about ½ an inch of water into the bottom tray with no holes. Bottom watering allows for the roots to reach the water easier and encourages strong, tall shoots.

Check water levels daily and add more if the water appears to be running low or the tray is dry.

Harvesting: Once the Microgreens reach roughly 3 Inches tall, they are ready to be harvested.

To harvest, use a very sharp knife to cut through the stems just above the medium. Do not wash Microgreens until you are ready to eat them. To store them, place them in a Ziplock bag with a few holes poked in it and place in your refrigerators crisper. They will last for up to a week. Enjoy!

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS - SOIL

What You Will Need:

  • Microgreen Seeds
  • Soil
  • 2 Growing Trays Without Holes
  • 1 Growing Tray With Holes

Preparation: Start by nesting the growing tray with holes into a growing tray without holes. (This is to encourage drainage).

Fill the tray with soil-about ½ inch from the top of the tray. Be sure to spread evenly and break down any clumps of soil.

Tamp soil by placing the other growing tray without holes on top and pressing down lightly.

Remove tray used for tamping and water the soil thoroughly. Once the soil has been watered, scatter seeds evenly on top of the soil. Mist or water seeds lightly to encourage germination.

Blackout: To encourage germination and growth; the Microgreens need to go through a blackout phase.

Stack your tray without holes on top of the other two trays (as if nesting) filled with the soil and seeds. Place a weight on top (about 5-10 lbs) and set aside for roughly 2-4 days.

After 3-4 days, the Microgreens should start slightly poking out the sides of the trays – this is when their blackout phase can be finished. Don’t worry, these Microgreens are strong and will push through!

Once the black out phase is complete, remove top tray and place Microgreens in a well lit area and water twice per day.

Harvesting: Once the Microgreens reach roughly 3 Inches tall, they are ready to be harvested.

To harvest, use a very sharp knife to cut through the stems just above the soil. Do not wash Microgreens until you are ready to eat them. To store them, place them in a Ziplock bag with a few holes poked in it and place in your refrigerators crisper. They will last for up to a week. Enjoy!

Red Garnet Amaranth Microgreens are very small and delicate, preferring warmer growing conditions without too much direct light. For best results find a warm spot where plants can be left for both germination and growing. Red Garnet Amaranth Microgreens will not grow very tall, so expect small greens that need to be harvested close to the root line and rinsed well before use.

Are Your Seeds Organic? What does Certified Organic and/or USDA Organic Mean?
All Purely Organic Seeds (and many varieties of the other seed brands we carry) are Certified Organic and carry the USDA Organic Seal. This means that our seeds are non-GMO (not genetically modified), and are chemical and pesticide free. They have passed rigorously standards and certified by a USDA Accredited agency. To determine whether the seed packet you're interested in is organic, look for the USDA Organic seal.

Are Your Seeds Heirloom? What are Heirloom Seeds?
Heirloom Seeds (sometimes called Heritage Seeds) are open pollinated vegetable and herb seed strains that have been planted, grown and harvested for several generations (usually more than 30 or 50 years depending on the variety) with consistent results. Heirloom seeds are always non-GMO and are never hybrids. All of our vegetable and herb seeds are heirloom seeds.

Are Your Seeds Non-GMO? What Does Non-GMO Mean?
Non-GMO means seeds (or other products) that were produced without genetic engineering and were not derived from GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). All of our seeds are non-GMO.

Where do Your Seeds Come From?
Most of the seeds offered on our site are USA Origin seeds sourced from certified US based suppliers. We do also source a small number of seeds from other countries. To view the specific origin of any of our current seed offerings, check the seed packet or look in the specifications for "Country of Origin" on any product page.

Are Your Seeds Packed for the Current Growing Season?
All of our seed packets are packed for the current growing season. If stored properly they will provide high germination rates for 1-2 additional years as well.

How Can I Store My Seeds Safely for Use in the Future?
Our seeds will generally retain their high germination rates for several years from the date of purchase. If you're planning on saving your seeds for us in the future, the most important thing to remember that seeds like to be stored where it is cool, dry and dark. The easiest way to ensure this for long term storage at home is to double-seal your seeds inside two zipper style bags and then place them in the freezer. (Make sure you label your seeds for future reference if they're not in original packaging.) When you're ready to plant your seeds, take just the ones you want to use out of the freezer and let them sit on a counter, in a covered container, for a few days to thaw and stabilize before being planted. To preserve germination rates, minimize temperature, light and humidity fluctuations by storing your seeds at the back of the freezer and only taking them out when you're ready to use them.

The Package with my Seeds in was Left Outside in Freezing and/or Rainy Weather. Will the Seeds Still Work?
As long as your seeds have not gotten wet they should work fine. Freezing temperatures will not hurt the seeds.

Are Your Seeds Treated?
No. The USDA Certified Organic Program prohibits the use of treated seeds. All of our seeds -- whether certified organic or not -- are untreated.
